Facade cleaning

Facade cleaning using professional high-pressure trailers

Facades are exposed daily to the elements, traffic, algae, moss, soot, dust, paint residues and graffiti. Professional high-pressure techniques are used to remove this dirt in a targeted manner, without causing unnecessary damage to the surface.

The cleaning method depends on the material, the level of soiling and the desired working speed. Working pressure, water capacity and temperature together determine both the result and the safety of the façade. Waterkracht develops and supplies professional cleaning systems for a wide range of applications, from listed buildings to large-scale non-residential construction.

When is a façade cleaning machine the right solution?

Professional façade cleaning machines effectively remove dirt from façades, concrete and other stone-like surfaces.

Professional façade cleaning is used for, amongst other things:

  • Removing algae and moss
  • Cleaning soot and dust build-up
  • Removing pollution caused by traffic, industry and weather conditions
  • Graffiti removal
  • Cleaning of concrete and brickwork
  • Maintenance of listed façades
  • Preparation for painting and renovation work

To ensure a safe and effective result, façade cleaning is tailored to both the nature of the dirt and the type of façade material. For example, a delicate sand-lime brick façade requires a different approach to concrete, brickwork or hard-fired clinkers.

The role of pressure, water capacity and temperature

When cleaning façades, attention is often focused on the machine’s working pressure. In practice, however, the cleaning result is determined by a combination of pressure, water capacity and temperature.

Workload

The working pressure determines the mechanical force used to dislodge dirt from the surface. With sensitive façade materials, a lower working pressure is often used to prevent damage to joints or brickwork.

Water capacity

The water capacity ensures that loosened dirt is effectively washed away and does not end up back on the façade. In addition, larger surfaces can be cleaned more quickly.

Temperature

Warm or hot water helps to loosen dirt from the surface more quickly. Temperature can play a significant role in the cleaning process, particularly when dealing with biological deposits, grease, traffic and industrial pollution, and certain types of paint.

According to the principles of the Sinner’s Circle, pressure, temperature, time and, where applicable, chemicals can complement one another. By adjusting the temperature, cleaning can be carried out at a lower working pressure in many situations. This maintains the cleaning power whilst reducing the risk of damage to the façade.

High-pressure trailers for façade cleaning

Mobile high-pressure trailers are often used for work on site. These machines combine an integrated water tank with a powerful high-pressure system and a heating system.

This makes it possible to carry out cleaning work at sites without a direct water supply or where work needs to be carried out independently for extended periods.

Depending on the model, these systems feature:

  • An integrated water tank
  • High-pressure pumps with high water capacity
  • Hot Water or Boiling Hot Water Technology®
  • Infinitely variable working pressure
  • Burner systems for constant water temperatures
  • Available with diesel or electric drive

Thanks to this combination, the machines are highly versatile for façade maintenance, heritage conservation, renovation projects and specialist cleaning work.

Facade cleaning using the Boiling Hot Water Technique®

Certain methods of façade cleaning make use of Boiling Hot Water Technology®. In this process, water is heated to approximately 102 °C and then applied to the façade via a high-pressure system.

The technology is used, amongst other things, for:

  • Removal of moss and algae
  • Cleaning of natural stone
  • Removal of pollution caused by traffic, industry and weather conditions
  • Graffiti removal
  • Maintenance of listed façades

As temperature plays a greater role in the cleaning process, façade cleaning can often be carried out at a lower working pressure. This minimises the strain on the surface, whilst effectively removing stubborn dirt and reducing the risk of damage.

Which façade cleaning machine is best suited to your work?

The choice of a treatment plant depends on various factors:

  • Type of façade material
  • Type of soiling
  • Required capacity
  • Availability of water on site
  • Frequency of use
  • Desired mobility of the installation

Waterkracht supplies mobile high-pressure trailers and bespoke solutions for professional façade cleaning and specialist cleaning work. Based on the level of soiling, the façade material and the required capacity, we work with you to determine which combination of pressure, water capacity, temperature and accessories best suits your work.
